Missy Elliott – Iconology
Fourteen years have passed since Missy released a new album, but that doesn’t mean she’s been swinging in a hammock in Tahiti. With every high-powered feature—from Janet Jackson to Ariana Grande to Lizzo—new audiences were introduced to a pioneer who brought futuristic rhythms and a brazen sexual energy to hip-hop and pop.
This five-song drop, timed to coincide with her 2019 MTV VMA Video Vanguard Award, tidily summarises everything we love about Miss E. The club tracks “Throw It Back” and “Cool Off” are authoritative statements from a respected elder (her line “I did records for Tweet before y’all could even tweet” is pure gold).
“DripDemeanor” is a simmering ballad, advocating for love and pleasure on her terms. “Why I Still Love You” takes a cheating lover to task while showcasing her singing voice (peep the a cappella track for proof).
